Capital Area Transit (CAT) Share-A-Ride is a door-to-door service that provides transportation to senior citizens, riders with disabilities and other members of the general public throughout Dauphin County.

In Harrisburg, Share-A-Ride service is available Monday to Friday from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 6 AM to 6 PM.

Shared-Ride Service

CAT Share-A-Ride provides service which is shared-ride in nature. That means that you will likely be riding with others, and that other individuals may be picked up and dropped off before you reach your destination. We try to make sure, in most instances, that no one rides for more than an hour, but the trip may well take longer than if you were going by yourself, and passengers need to plan accordingly.

The service provided is door-to-door. Most of the vans have wheelchair lifts. Passengers receive assistance from drivers with walking, boarding and exiting the vehicle, up to the door of your home or destination. Drivers cannot, however, take a wheelchair up or down steps, or provide any lifting assistance for passengers.

All users of specialized services must be registered with CAT Share-A-Ride, and reservations are required. If a rider must cancel a trip, he or she must call the Dispatch Office (Harrisburg—232-6104, extension 136 at least one hour before the scheduled pick-up time.

Service Area

CAT Share-A-Ride offers service to Dauphin County, the urbanized area of Cumberland County, and occasionally into adjacent counties. For the most part, trips to Cumberland County are limited to medical trips in the Camp Hill/Mechanicsburg area.

In Harrisburg, group trips in and around the primary service area can be arranged through residences, nursing homes and senior centers.

Office Hours

The Harrisburg Office is located at 901 North Cameron Street. Office hours are from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.

Scheduling Appointments:

Appointments must be phoned into the Scheduling Office (Harrisburg: 232-6100) no later than 12:00 PM for all trips other than SET trips and 4:00 PM for SET trips, the day before the desired appointment. Customers are encouraged to call several days in advance when possible.


Please be sure to phone in an appointment at least one (1) day earlier than normal around each of the following holidays. CAT Share-A-Ride will be closed on the following holidays so our employees may enjoy the holidays with their families.

Types of Riders

Customers who are 65 or over can use CAT Share-A-Ride for any trip purpose. To receive more information about the Senior Citizen Transit Card, please call or stop in to CAT. Seniors possessing the card can ride for as little as $1.00. The fare is based upon the length of the trip.

MATP (Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP)Click here for more information
The Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP) provides transportation funding for eligible, low-income customers. MATP participants must have a valid Pennsylvania ACCESS card and complete the appropriate certification form to qualify for medical transportation.

SET (Special Efforts Transportation)Click here for more information
The SET program provides door-to-door service for qualified persons, in the areas and at times when bus service is generally available. It is intended to be complementary to fixed-route bus service, and as such is intended to fulfill the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Individuals are eligible under SET if they are unable to use regular buses, or unable to travel to and from a bus stop, due to a physical or mental disability. An application is necessary, which requires certification of a qualifying disability by a physician or human services professional. One-way trips cost from $3.50 to $5.90, or twice the regular bus fare. For further information, contact the Share-A-Ride office.

Persons with Disabilities (PwD) ProgramClick here for more information
CAT Share-A-Ride is participating in a PennDOT program which funds transportation for Persons with Disabilities. A certification process, similar to that for SET, is required. Qualified individuals may use the PwD program for trips not accessible under SET or eligible through another program. Other rules for this service are similar to the Senior Shared-Ride program. . A passenger fare for a 3.9 mile trip would cost $3.50, longer trips would cost more as the miles increase.  Please call for more details.

MH/MR Clients
The Dauphin County MH/ID program will determine if their clients are eligible to use the service. Their clients are then registered with CAT Share-A-Ride.

Youth Riders
Youth riders are able to ride if they are traveling to their own scheduled doctor’s appointment. An adult must accompany any child under the age of 12. Children under the age of four must be in a car seat, and those from five to eight in a booster seat, which must be provided by the parent or guardian. If the child does not have a car seat, the ride will not be provided.


All riders must bring exact fare. The driver cannot give change. Unless an agency is paying for the rider’s trip, fares are as follows:

Ages 65 and over a base fare of $2.25 for a trip of 3.9 miles or less. The fares increase as the mileage increases. General Public $15.00

Pick Ups/Drop Offs:

All passengers must be ready and looking for the Share-A-Ride vehicle at least 15 minutes prior until 15 minutes after the scheduled time for a pick-up, and from the scheduled pick-up time until 15 minutes after for a return. When the van arrives at the pick-up site, the operator can wait no more than five (5) minutes. If the van does not arrive within 15 minutes of the scheduled pick-up time, please call 232-6104, ext. 136 to inquire about the whereabouts of the van.


In order to schedule a return trip, it may be necessary to estimate a return time. If the rider feels that he/she will not be ready at the scheduled return time, please telephone the Scheduling Office. When the appointment is completed, please telephone the Scheduling Office so they can send the next available vehicle. If the rider decides to obtain a ride home with another party, please call the Scheduling Office to cancel the scheduled return trip.

Change of Address:

If there is a change of address and/or telephone number, please be sure to telephone the Scheduling Office at 232-6100;  after 10:00 AM with the new information so the file may be updated.

Lost and Found

Lost items are returned to CAT Share-A-Ride and will be kept in the Dispatch Office for 30 days.

Travel Tips

  • Please no eating or drinking on the van.
  • Passengers must have exact fare – drivers do not make change.
  • Smoking is prohibited on the van.
  • Guide/Service animals are the only animals permitted on the van.
  • Loud and disruptive behavior may result in removal from the van.
  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times.
  • Grocery shopping passengers are limited to what can be reasonably carried by one person in one trip.
  • If a passenger needs a personal care attendant, notify the Scheduling Office.
  • Drivers are not permitted to take wheelchairs up or down stairs, nor permitted to enter residence or destination point.
