ADA
Program Information
In addition to special discounts for regular bus service, CAT offers a variety of door-to-door transportation services for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Half Fare Program
Passengers with a disability, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, may be entitled to a Reduced Transit Fare Identification Card to ride regular fixed-route buses for one-half the regular adult fare. A Medicare card is sufficient proof of disability for persons under the age of 65. Passengers may bring their Medicare card to CAT’sCameron Street office or to the Strawberry Square Information Office to receive their identification card. If you do not have a Medicare card, you may ask to have an application mailed to you. A doctor will need to sign the application to verify your disability. Once this is done, you may either mail the completed application to CAT or return it in person and a Reduced Transit Fare Identification Card will be issued to you.

Passengers over 65 may also use their Medicare Card to ride for half fare, however, CAT encourages them to apply for the Commonwealth of PA Senior Citizen ID Card free fare card and ride for free.

PA Senior Citizens Free Ride Program
Passengers 65 years of age or older can ride free on CAT’s fixed-route bus system. To be eligible for the Free Fare Program, passengers must register with CAT to obtain a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Senior Citizen ID Card. To receive the Senior Citizen ID Card, passengers must bring approved proof of age to CAT’sCameron Street office or to the Strawberry Square Information Office. An application will be completed and the ID card will be issued immediately. Photo copies of the appropriate proof of age may also be mailed with an application in order to receive the ID card.

The following are Pennsylvania’s approved proof of age documents: Birth Certificate, Baptismal Certificate, Naturalization Papers, Passport, Statement from Social Security Administration, Armed Forces Discharge/Separation Papers, Pennsylvania Identification Card, Photo Motor Vehicle Operator's License, Resident Alien Card, Pace Card or Veteran's Universal Access Identification Card.

ADA Special Efforts Transportation (SET) Program
In addition to special discounts for regular bus service, CAT offers door-to-door transportation services for persons with disabilities.

The SET program provides door-to-door service for qualified persons - in the areas and at the times when bus service is available - for individuals who are unable to use fixed-route bus service. SET is intended to complement our fixed-route bus service and fulfills the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

With SET, you will you will receive door-to-door service with assistance by the driver. SET service includes whatever assistance you need up to the door of the location where you are traveling. The driver cannot take a wheelchair up and down steps or go into a building in search of a passenger.

Reservations are required.

Who is Eligible
Individuals are eligible to use the SET program if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Inability, as the result of a physical or mental impairment, to use regular buses
  • Inability, as the result of a specific impairment-related condition, to travel to and from a bus stop
  • Previous certification from another transit agency

How to Register
If you are eligible to use SET, please call the CAT office at 232-6100 for an easy-to-complete application. An application will be mailed to you and your physician's signature is required. Once you have completed the application, a brief interview to complete the certification process will be scheduled at the CAT office. Transportation to and from the interview is available from CAT.
